Hi there,

Just discovered that there are decans that separate your astrological sign?

So I'm Sagittarius but having done some elementary reading on decans I find that with the Sun in 10° 22' Sagittarius in my Natal chart, I'm actually a 2nd decan Sagittarius. So does that mean my ruling planet is not Jupiter and is actually Mars. So how does it make things different for me from say a Sagittarian in the 1st decan?

It's my understanding the the decans begin with the first sign of your element. As a sagittarius, your element is fire. The first decan of your sign would be from 0 degrees to 9 degrees 59 seconds of Sagittarius. The first fire sign is Aries, ruled by Mars corresponding to the first Decan of any fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). The 2nd decan of Sagittarius and any fire sign would be Leo. For a sagittarian, this means that you would exhibit Leonine qualities. Your ruling planet remains the same, in this case Jupiter, for all sagittarians.

Correcting Mr. L, here. The decans work in a sort of Sinister Trine format. The first decan of any Sign is that very Sign. So, the first decan of Sagittarius is Sagittarius. The second decan of any Sign belongs to the next Sign of that element. So, the second decan of Sagittarius belongs to Aries, as that is the next Fire Sign to rise. The third decan belongs to the final Sign of that element, in our example using Sagittarius, his final decan would be Leo.

So, for Aries it'd be Aries/Leo/Sagittarius.
Taurus is Taurus/Virgo/Capricorn.
Gemini is Gemini/Libra/Aquarius
Cancer is Cancer/Scorpio/Pisces
Leo is Leo/Sagittarius/Aries
Virgo is Virgo/Capricorn/Taurus
Libra is Libra/Aquarius/Gemini
Scorpio is Scorpio/Pisces/Cancer
Sagittarius is Sagittarius/Aries/Leo
Capricorn is Capricorn/Taurus/Virgo
Aquarius is Aquarius/Gemini/Libra
Pisces is Pisces/Cancer/Scorpio
