Emotions ( the moon) and communications(Mercury) in a poor placement is the most likely cause of this.  I have an opposition of my moon and Mercury, makes it very hard for me to verbalise how I feel as well.  I suspect that his emotions are just so strong that there arent any words to express them.

No it is not true a person’s moon sign will ‘over win’ the sun sign traits at all. We are all multi faceted human beings and it depends on the ‘aspects’ within a natal chart as to how the planetary energies will display themselves--

Now basically your sun sign is your 'core beliefs, values, ego' and Asc is your physical body, mode of expression and mask and persona that we all wear and hide behind, but definitely not what's going on underneath.
