from a karmic astrology perspective, the moon sign person often acts as a mentor to the sun sign person who the moon person sees as a delightful expression of a part of themselves that they can not express as easily as they once could long ago and far away. this is because the moon is the sign we were in a previous life. but all other aspects need to be taken into account between two people.
when the sun and moon are in aspect to one another or parallel/contraparallel it is in indication of a past life marriage between the two of them - sun person having been husband and moon person wife. i am currently getting to know somone who has both of these aspects with me - his moon to my sun and his sun to my moon. the comfort level was pretty much immediate. if the aspect is a square or opposition the past life marriage was full of conflict and this tendency wants to repeat itself. in this case the sun person will often reveal uncomfortable truths about the moon sign person's childhood. but if the sun person is wise and the moon person open to the truth this will be positive - this is an excellent aspect to have with one's therapist.
one person's ascendant the same as the other's sun is also a draw in many cases.
venus/mars aspects create sexual fire but are not productive on their own of deeper bonds between people.
i have observed that the magi society's teaching that chiron is the most important planet between two people's charts seems to work out in many cases - positive aspects between venus and chiron being extremely powerful, while saturn square, opposed or quincunx chiron is almost certainly an indication that the chiron person will have their heart broken. sun square or opposed to mars is also a pretty nasty aspect for two people to have.
when the suns are in close aspect (even semi-sextile) this is an indication of a soul bond between two people and can be very powerful for spiritually oriented people.
one of the most important keys to compatibility is how willing the two people are to grow, face the truth together and seek out professional help when necessary. in this case the aspects just tell us what the issues are between two people. astrology should not be used too fatalistically.

Hi,
The above is not a reading query. It is being moved to the Western astrology forum.

An excellent book on the subject is the Astrology of Relationships, by Robert Hand. Venus/Mars aspects tend to relate to sexual attraction, courting, and physical chemistry. Sun/moon aspects contribute to areas of the personality where two are in agreement, or share a mutual understanding. All signs and charts have areas of agreement and concord with all other signs and specific charts, just as there are usually areas of disagreement, or where work is needed. A "hard" comparison chart (many planets in signs squaring one another) can be seen as obstacles to the relationship OR as stepping stones to more mutual understanding and the ability to grow. So there is no chart that is inherently "bad" and another that is inherently good. Remember, no relationship is perfect, but some relationships are more perfect than others. :)
