dear all.
i have a basic doubt. If the case is that navamsa is more fine grained division of the horoscope than the rasi chart, then is it not more logical to see the navamsa chart for all the reading.  why do we need to see rasi chart , then read navamsa for only certain specific points ?
2) Are all the interpreting rules for the rasi charts apply for all the divisions like navamsa also ?
3) if the asc is different in rasi and navamsa, which one would be more suited for reading  a personality ?

Dear rishi:

your views on this ?

Divisional charts are only used for a particular area of life. D10 for only career, D3 for siblings etc...but many people use D9 as a support chart for natal chart.
In divisional charts the important points to look at  are ASC, karaka( e.g Sun for D10) and say 10th house for D10, 9th house for D9, 8th house in D20 etc...You can also look how the 10th lord in radix is placed in D10.
D9 is essentailly a fortune chart ( if you are a child, it can tell you about your father etc.. ) and spouse chart when married.
Many people also read the divsional charts just like we read a natal chart. Many also use in transits. In the beginning you should limit to what I described above, once you know the intricacies involved then you can decide how to go by.

Each Vargha is associated with a house of interest. After D12 , you divide the number by 12 and keep the remainder( this will be the house of interest) e.g D16 has to do with 4th house, D30 has to do with 6th house etc. Most useful ones are D3,D9,D10 and D30. Divisional chart upto D12 apply to our existence and operate at physical level. Higher charts operate at  different level of awareness.
Rasi (D1) - 1st house (SUN)
Hora (D2) - 2nd house (MOON)
Drekkana (D3) - 3rd house(MARS)
Chaturthamsa (D4) - 4th house(MECURY)
Saptamsa (D7) - 7th house(JUPITOR)
Navamsa (D9) - 9th house(VENUS)
Dasamsa (D10) - 10th house(SATURN/SUN)
Dvadasamsa (D12) - 12th house(NODES)

Rasi basically contains 30 Degrees. The planet may be in the beginning or in the end of the Span of 30 Degrees. The result a planet gives is different for both. Hence Our ancient seers had devised a fine tuning of the position of a planet in a Rasi. By sub deviding a Rasi of 30 Degrees into Nine Parts of 3 Degrees- 20 Minutes each, You get the Position of the Planet in a Particular Navamsa of 3-20  Like wise other Varga charts. Parashara and other Rishis attributed certain aspects of Life to be studied with the help of a Varga Chart. So we usually study Navamsa along with the Rasi Chart for the purpose of Matrimonials aspects of Life. Regarding Karakas different Karakas are specified by Parashara and Jaimini for different aspects of Life. Jupitor is called a Putra Karaka as per Parashara. For studying the Progeny we use Saptamsa Chart, D-7. along with of course Main Rasi Kundali. Here we also study the position of Jupiter in the D-7 Chart as he is the Karaka for children. We study the 5th House, 9th House in the Rasi chart from Lagna as well as Karaka Jupiter, Though 5th House represents many aspects o life in addition to Children, the 5th House from the Karaka Jupiter represents only Children. This is again studied both in Rasi and D-7 Varga Chart.
