The sum of points for all houses in BAV for a given planet is constant. If it contributes more points to some house than it is also contributing less points to some other house. Suppose you are interested in BAV of Jupitor and you know Jupitor is Karaka for 2nd, 5th, 9th and 10th house, if you get good points above 5 in each of these house then you know jupitor is doing it's job.

For Shadbala I will suggest break it into Sthan bala( location in chart), Drigbala( Strength due to aspects) and Digbala (directional strength) and if you see relatively good scores here you know Jupitor is pretty powerful.

For the Dasa to be very successful I would say you should have Vimshopak bala( Strength in divisional charts) WAY over 10. If Vasiseshkamsa is above 3 then you know you are in very good shape dasa wise.
