I do find in the state Kerala, people giving more  Importance  of this Gulika and Mandhi in charts and predictions.  . Tamilians too always make charts with Mandhi. I happen to note Mandhi    in almost all  charts of natives born before 1960. Especially I have come across Raman Ayanmasa widely used in all charts in my entire family and which gives importance to Mandhi. But now a days in computerized charts I find no importance to this Mandhi . I do wonder why is this ?

Around 2 years back I was reading a book by late Narayan Dutta Srimali, (famous Astrologer from Jaipur) in which he said that Maandi and Gulika are not different but one planet only. Till date I can't make out what he really meant!!! As Upgraha (Secondary Planets), they are different from each other and usually have a distance of approx 11 degrees in them (Please correct me if I am wrong). So can anyone suggest that is it really so in North part of India to think these 2 two as one planet? Any book or reference?

One general difference I found in the Astrologers I came across is that in North India, Gochara and Transits are usual tools while in South Dasa and Nakshatra based predictions are normal. In both cases predications come true. But in South the detailed Research on Astrology has been done in the past century, particularly by late K. S Krishnamurthi.  Later people like Shri. Khullar has added interesting facts.

Has someone done such work on Maandi or Gulika? Or any book is available with some case studies etc for these sub planets?

planets like Mandi, Upaketu, Gulik, etc. are called "Upagrahas" and are mentioned in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra right after the main nine planets. In fact in that same text you can find definitions such as when Gulik is in 12th a person is attracted to base or corrupt women and things of that nature.


 The following are said to be Upagrahas.-


Dhuman
Vyadhipadan
Parivdan
Indhira dhanusu
Upakethu
Kaalan
Arthapraharan
Mruthyu
yamagantaka
Gulikan.

. So Iam sure Gulikan and Mandhi are not the same planets. Both are different Upagrahas. If Iam write, I think the first 5 upgrahas are said to be Dhumathi Upagrahas and second 5 are said to be Gulikadhi Upagrahas. While calculating the Sputas they are considered. But I am  a learner, I dont experience with these Upgrahas.as of now. In our vedic learning forum too U can have the information on these Upagrahs. Kindly go though them please. But I  think more has to be taught in our learning forum about these Upgrahas . But I always find the terms Gulikan more in keralite charts than Mandhi . Mandhi U do come across much i n Tamil nadu and Andhra charts. As I belong to South and Tamil Nadu I know  these things.

Mandhi is widely used in Prasna charts so I think it is more  widely used by keralites as they are experts in Prashna jyothish. In mundane astrology too we can find the use of Mandhi and Gulika. While surfing the net I got to see this link on gulika and mandhi usage. Kindly go throug this link please. my understanding of this Mandhi or Gulika is , it is used in determining Longevity of native .
