Im trying to learn more about vedic astrology myself. I downloaded free software called Jhora - Jagannatha Hora - u could search for this on google. Its very simple to use and gives you chart, planet positions and important yogas.
Then you could read some of the classics which also are available for free on internet. (Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Saraveli, PhalaDeepika, Jataka Alankara, Brihat Jataka ex)
Also this forum has a lot of information about houses and planets. Another great internetresource is Barbara Pijan webpage which has a lot of info.

Thanks for the responses. I'll have to wait till I have the time and energy to do more research.
I don't have a computer I travel a lot, so downloading software is not exactly practical as I'm not likely to be at the same computer long.
I might stick to western astrology a but longer which I have more grasp of, or palm reading as I have a genetic advantage for learning as my mum practiced it professionally before I was born.
