I thought Jupiter being in the first house is a good thing. Since it effects the 5 , 7 , and 9 houses.. ? How is it jupiter being in the first house bad ??

Yes , it is said to be one of the most ideal placement of Jup coz from there its gona aspect al the trikonas of chart which are also its aspecting houses.

As it is said in BPHS that placement of jup in lagna will make native affluent and placement of jup with moon in lagan will be ROYAL sign for native.
But still im not gona completely ignore this maxim of "SWAH STHAN HANTHA" but will not completely follow it also and deending upon placement will consider it.

BV Raman ji has also said that placement of jup in first house will make native happy in the BEGINNNING... And if you see lagan is defeinetely more importnat thru out native's life but is more imp at the time of birth in reagrd to the ambience native is gona take a birth.

So jup does play important part esp when in lagan.

Jupiter being benefic in nature can never spoil the house in which it is place whether exalted or debilitated.

jf K N rao has exalted jupiter in his 10th house mean he will get good job in some govt sector nothing else. that mean favor form king in old day.

Jupiter is the teacher of God and Sukracharya the teacher of Demon both are natural benefic . so we have to see the overall postion of various planet to know the effect  and working of Jupiter for a person.

Jupiter in 6th house in which rashi and conjuct and aspect of  with with planets .If it is alone being benefic so person will not resist toward its enemy. we have to judge a horoscope in its totality .
