Dear All,

Was just curious - is there a numerology system as part of vedic traditions? I have only come across western numerology systmes (based on the chaldean alphabet I think).

What is the vedic view on numerology?

Dear akshaykapoor1973

Jaimini Maharishi has been following the katapayadi varg system of numerology for coding the number of houses and signs within words. In this system, the sanskrit vowels have a zero value and each of the consonants Ka, Ta,Pa &Ya have a numerical value for one , hence the name katapayadi varga. The consonants following these hav a sequentially higher numerical values.

with advent of time, and the influence of english and western culture, our sytem of naming according to the nakshatra and rasi have been given a go by.  Most of the modern Indians sychophants of western culture who cannot understand sanskrit fall back on the western numerology and hence the wide propoganda is been made on the western numerology. While the foreigner all over the world are realising  the importance of Vedic astrology  and doing research , our Indians are failing to understand the importance of vedic science. It is unfortunate that Sanskrit in our country has been relegated  to such a level because of the psuedo modern culture. The people in this country have long way to go to understand the great treasure that is  stored in our vedas. Vedic numerology  & mathematics do exist  and it is  uncomparable with that of  western numerology. I suggest you read the book  titled " Numerology, with Tantra, Ayurveda and astrology- A key to Human behaviour, by Harish Johari". After reading  many such books I am of the opinion that  the Western Numerology is no where nearer to vedic numerology .  I  emphasise and say that western astrology fails in many quarters

Govardhanji,

The popularity of non-indian (western vs eastern are very vague classifications because there are more than one western systems and equally more than one eastern) numerology is not just because of the reasons mentioned about you, but the staring-in-ou-face-FACT that much more has been written and published and readily available about western numerology. Indians have a tendency to hold on to information a bit too greedily on the pretext of parampara and all such secrecy etc. Well here is the good news: India is not ruled by foreign rulers anymore! The Turks, Moghuls, Portugese, French, English have left but the 'hoarding' tendency of keepers of vedic knowledge continues!

I am sorry if my words are sounding offensive to you or others. Truth often sounds bitter as we all know!

Knowledge never diminishes through free distribution in free times (compared to years ago, these are relatively free times!) but if not freely distributed it does get corrupted, as we are seeing in jyotish, for knowledge is like water -- it turns stale and stinks if kept stagnant too long!

Govardhanji, I totally agree with you . It is sad that our people dont realize the wealth of their cultral heritage. This also manifests in our total lack of geopolitcal awareness and strategic thinking which has translated into our political and economic weakness over centuries.

Anyway let me not get started on this theme here.

Question for you - the number 8 has negative connotations in western numerology. Do you know if our system also has similar concerns on number 8.

RohiniRanjanji, unfortunately think we shall be ruled by foreigners again...for the reasons mentioned above!

Dear Akshaykapoor1973

According to our vedic scriptures, Astami and Navami are supposed to be not good, equally so ardhaastama. They are considered to be bad and malefic. But I hasten to add , it is not the case for all  situation. For vrishab, Tula or makar rasi in particular, the number  8 is not that bad. I would request you to read the book mentioned by me for more  on it .
