hi davv, your question about retrogration of planets made me study deep in this subject, as to my astrology knowlege is concern,planets like mars, jupitor, venus ,saturn  retrogrates for certain time, u can refer this in panchang , the dates and time will be given in particular year when the planetrs go in retrogation and they will come to their original place, this is called vakra gathi aur vakra nivarthi vakra vimochan in hindi panchang.

some astrologers who writes predections on daily weekly magazines used to write the periods of retrogation of even planete like Rahu and kethu, we all know these two chaya grahas always moves in backwards against all other planets, i do feel how these two planets retrogate? as their directions are already in reverse, But many famous astrologers never talk about retrogration of rahu and kethu.

Ranjanji please clear our doubts about this retrogration.

usually   two major  palnets go astang for certain periods during a year , they are jupitor and venus only. this is also given in all panchangs .

this year sarvajit year

jupitor guru  g rah went on astang from 15-12-2007 to 14-01-2008

venus grah                                          20-08-2007 to 30-08-2007


these periods are usually not considered auspicious.

I too do not know why one should not do any important auspicious things on these days , let us get answers from RANJANIji please

Yes a part of your explanation is true but asthangath is totally a different phenomenon....
Retrograde although can be technically explained ..astronomically...it has a huge astrological significance as regards to the phala jyothish or the results out the retrograde planet..what a direct planet cannot do can easily achieved by retro planets and this has  lot of significance......

Once again ithank u for correcting me about ashtangh  grah, sorry i made a mistake, what i have written is said to be Guru sukra moodam in tamil, that means in that particlular given period Guru grah and venus grah rises sets and rises, as sun gets seting in the west and rising in the east.

during that period usually people are denied from doing some auspicious functions and celebtarions.

Now iam  very clear about ashtangh grah

some times planets rotating on its axis comes very close to sun and looses their power, at  certain degrres. Then they  iareasregarded as astangh grahas

the following are the distance of degrees from which they get astangh

from sun   to    moon  if the   range of  distance  is 12  degrees

                       mars                                           17

                       mercury                                      13

                       jupitor                                         11

                       venus                                            9

                       saturn                                          15



under this close relationship with sun all thse other planets gets ashtang looses their power, at that time these planets are said to be  bad , and they bring only  bad results

 so while predicting any kundali the astrolger should consider the point of  degree  of ashtang to decide the nature of that particular planet whether  a  subha grah or a  ashubh grah

      Like wise some times we fing grah yudh



Allthe five grahas except sun and moon comes under grah yud while crossing them at a certain given degrees, while taking into account the utcha bal neech bal ect this grah yud also becomes the deciding factor of the nature of the planet   and forms the basis of analyses of that particular janam kundali

May be the explanation is only fraction of a huge topic , because I have personally seen the combust planets sometimes actually producing phenomenal results...now what results could also mean a matter of debate...however I agree with the asthangath grahas...at such times I think rather than shubh grahas causing good results they become silent i.e they let malefic influences grow or show their might....
But yes it is very important to note these periods...I have noted the changes in such asthanagth periods ...The shubh grahas dont seem to actto fructify in good results.

I would love to see the chart/s where:

= the negative effect was explainable only by the astangata dosha (combustion)
= situations where benefic sun was combusting a generally friendly planet and responsible for the evil/negative effect.
