According to BPHS Venus is a functional malefic for Vrishab lagna. Would like to know whether it is justified in calling it so.

Let me tell you what I think about it. For Vrishab lagna Venus is the lagna lord which makes it extremely aupicious but it is the 6th lord as well so there is maleficity attached to it. Now a planet gives the results of the house which has its mooltrikona sign, here the 6th house has the mooltrikona sign of Venus so the 6th lordship gets more strength than the lagna lordship. But I guess it's more logical to call Venus a neutral for Vrishab Lagna as because Venus getting the lagna lordship is a huge bonus point but BPHS still considers it a functional malefic for this lagna so interested in knowing what could be the reason behind calling it so. Parashar is the father of Vedic astrology so when he calls it so there must be a  strong logic behind it. I would appreciate it if anyone can explain.

Dear Basab,

Having never *channeled* Parasara Muni myself, I am not sure what was in the Great One's Mind but all "thatta" aside, let me try and explain as i see it.

You are right I have learned that too that moolatrikona sign determines the intrinsic mal or ben property of the planet. A very detailed discussion of this kind of consideration and particularly with reference to vimshottari dasha nirnaya is given in Laghu Parashara Bhashya. You (all!) must study it. The small "pocket book" is a gem and spends full time on astrological considerations and not other kind of prattle!

I had also learned that the odd or evenness of the sign is important which will not 'fit' in the case of taurus rising, unless you want to blame it on kendradhipatya dosha (benefic lord of kendra is evil or at least not good). In that consideration also remember that the lagna though very personal and lovable is the weakest kendra!

I am giving anecdotal facts here but venus being an earthy, samsarik, bhog-loving planet, benefits more individuals with a samsarik and superficial outlook and interests. Sometimes even exalted venus in the 11th gives a lot of pain and painful realizations that could hardly be called sweet or beautiful or loving if the venus is afflicted, by say saturn. However, that is the near-sighted view, karmically speaking!

They often say that the associations that mercury has often determine its characteristics and guna, but I see that consideration work very effectively in the case of ALL planets.

Thanks for sharing your views and also for suggesting Laghu Parashari. I don't think we can blame the kendra lordship of Venus for the negativity as according to BPHS lagna is a kendra and a trikona so extremely auspicious.

You have mentioned that Venus is an earthy planet but as far as my knowledge goes Venus is a watery planet.

Could you elaborate on how to understand the benefic or malefic nature of planets on the basis of odd and even signs.
Thanks for sharing this interesting point that other planets are also impressionable like Mercury.

I would like to add some spice to this discussion . Will Venus be malefic for vrishaba lagna, if it occupies either Mesha or Thula Rasi? What would be quality of such Venus if it is associated either by conjunction with Saturn  or in 7th house to the saturn? That is Venus & Saturn placed in the same house for Vrishaba lagna either in Mesha or Thula and Venus placed in Thula and Saturn placed in mesha or vice versa.
