Vimshottari Dasha
The most important and widely used dasha system is the Vimshottari dasha, which is a cycle of 120 years based on the maximum possible life span for an individual. Each of the seven planets and the two lunar nodes (making the nine navagraha) has its own period or mahadasha in the cycle. The Vimshottari dasha is linked to the system of nakshatras or lunar mansions by the fact that each of the navagraha is the lord (or ruler) of three of the twenty seven nakshatras (3 x 9), which together with the position of the moon, determine how the system operates.
Dear Andrzej,
Assuming that you are familiar with the one degree a year progression utilized in tropical astrology, Vimshottari is similar in a sense if you think about it. If you progress natal moon over 120 degrees (9 nakshatras) it would take 120 years to go through.
So you may think of Vimshottari dasha as a 120 degrees in 120 years lunar progression.
The difference is that the moon moves through the nakshatras at inequal speeds. It crosses the 13d20min of krittika in 6 progressed years but takes 20 years to progress through bharini, the next segment of 13d 20min
[[correction! Not the next segment but the previous one! I was originally going to use ashwini as the first example but then chose krittika instead as I was writing this!]]
Peace!
