Hello,
I'm new to the boards and have a question on the First house-the Ascendant.  I know several people with no planest in their first house/Ascendant and we are curious as to what that means and how to  interpret the house. I know there are aspects, the house lord and karaka, but what else should be used to interpret?

Thanks,
Danchi

As a general rule, houses which are occupied can be taken as the ones that have higher priority for activation, attention and expression in this lifetime. The hint for this comes from what was expressed in BPHS (Parashara) in the Sudarshan Chakra chapter.

Any padas that may show up in such a consideration are similarly influenced too.

See what first hs/ascendant stands for (in the life of the native, viz, what are the signifactions of the first hs), check it's sign (how does that shade the first hs signifactions), check which planets occupy it (since here it is none), go to next step i.e. see what it's lord is doing (where placed, with which other lords/planets, it's condition - exalt/debil etc in rasi and navamsa), then see what aspects the house (and it's lord) is recieving - that should give a fair idea.
