Mercury, in this case is technically termed combust.

Again we should remember that mercury being closer to the Sun always is combust for longer period of time.

My experiences from a few other charts of similar likeness:=
An example:-
                   Meena lagna.
                   Mercury the 4th and 7th. lord combust.
                   combusting planet Sun is in 9th. house.

It is like 'bhavishyad' combust, though it could be called improper term. The native has 4 houses, of which 1 is inherited. Has a very devoted spouse. Has a superb job and is a very good performer jobwise.

Thus all the factors fulfiled in material terms.   But none of these are fulfilled in mental terms. He has a spouse he would prefer staying away from. Never has the happiness of home. Jobwise it is always troubling.

Combustion of mercury is always seen to sharpen its feeling, like retrogression does.

Combustion of mercury from another sign would mean:= indirect effects, probanly come later, bhavishyat.

I feel combustion of planets like mercury and Venus affect the mental sphere.

This is a good area for research throughdiscussion with facts, as I feel my statement could have left some grey areas, and request the Seekers to help us complete the grey areas.

Dear Rishi,

I am still waiting for someone to show me a chart where combustion alone can be correlated with a definite astrological influence/trait/effect. Since different techniques and ayanamshas are utilized, any serious demonstration to educate me would require posting of full data (including the name of the birthplace and not the coordinates).

That said, while combustion (with smaller orbs than prescribed) may sound like an eclipse or occultation, particularly when exact (caizimi) please remember that an eclipse invariably ends up resulting in reduction of the illumination of the *lights*. In the case of mercury or venus for instance, there may be differences in the combustion/conjunction influences depending on whether the planet occults the sun or the sun occults the planet (inferior vs superior conjunction, respectively).

This is not something that can be resolved by the 'stream of consciousness' approach and would need to be examined in carefully selected, high quality charts and comparing reality with conjecture.

I do not believe the area or issue has been properly researched. If I am mistaken, I remain open to be educated ...

As reference for myself I keep the meaning of inferior and superior conjunction definitions as reference, as the tought never ocuured to me before.

Superior conjunction occurs when a planet passes behind the Sun as viewed from the Earth. This can happen to both inferior and superior planets, the only difference being that inferior planets, which are moving faster than the Earth, pass behind the Sun from west to east, whilst the slower superior planets pass from east to west.

Inferior conjunction occurs when an inferior planet passes between the Earth and the Sun. It is usually impossible to observe the planet close to inferior conjunction, because it is hidden by the glare of the Sun. Occasionally though, the planet can be seen to transit across the Sun's disk.

Birth details of B.B.= 10 Dec 1962 @at 13.20 hrs, I.S.T @Darjeeling:== 4th and 7th. lord mercury is combust.

Sorry -- I nearly missed this posting. A quick cursory look. There could be some issues related to marriage, relationship, immediate family.

Either way, this is not a good example to prove or disprove combustion effects. Notice the different signs that mercury and sun are in, also mercury is ahead of the sun and sun is weak in shadbala and also the fact that mercury is both the ruler of the 22nd drekkana and 64th navamsha!

Mercury being gnatikaraka and placed in 10th there could be problems with promotions or getting projects finished or promotions or acknowledgment in profession.

Perhaps I am missing entirely the point you were making when using this chart as an illustration.

When the sun is a functional benefic as he is for Leo or Sagittarius lagnas for eg, unless he is in the same nakshatra pada or degree as the combust planet, rather than give malefic results, he would impart a benefic influence.
When the combust planet is exalted or aspected by a very powerful benefic such as Vakra Jupiter, the defect is largely mitigated.
