Maybe Im mixing up my astrologies, but I was under the impression that each planet had a specific point for combustion, usually within an 8 degree orb and if it was not in that range it remained unafflicted. Today I was informed that the proximity has no affect and as long as a planet is in the same house with the sun it is combust. Is this true?

hi Jen,
The proximity has got a profound effect on combustion and like you mentioned, each planet has a specific point of combustion, usually within an 8-12 degree orb...
The planets in combustion are helpless in influencing a native, because their rays are obscured by sun and don't reach earth.
Also, many people(me 2) while practicing divide them into two classes, deep combustion(for any planet within 12 degree of sun) and combustion as per their normal specific point of combustion...
The range for combustion are
Moon ---> 12
Mercury--->14, 12(in retro motion)
Venus ----> 10, 8(retro)
Jup ---> 11, 8(R)
Mars ---> 17
Sat ---> 15

Also, many people never consider Mer to be combust because of its proximity to the Sun, but still I believe that it does makes a difference....and I don't remember but their is a special yoga if Mer is within 1-2 degree of Sun, which is supposed to bless the native with a very good memory and retention power, rings a bell, anybody??

Does this mean that if a malefic is combust that its negative affects cannot affect the native or does this combust status only affect the benefic influences? How does this combust status of a House Lord affect its house? Does this make only malefic results come from the house?

Thanks so much for your guidance

Hugs
Jen

I have yet to see an example that clearly puts the blame of affliction in a nativity on combustion! Until I see a clear evidence of combustion being the culprit, I view that tenet (combustion renders a planet powerless or malefic) with suspicion.

Examples have been forwarded over the years and in each case there were other strong negative influences. In other words the evidence was confounded!

I've never really felt or believed that combustion makes a planet malefic, I don't think that combustion has got anything to do with changing a planets natural or for that matter the temporal characteristics. The only thing I do believe is that it does render the planet a little powerless but then again we've so many other factors to see before we can judge whether a planet is powerful or powerless.
If Saturn is combust, what we've got at hand is the conjunction of Sun and Saturn which is a malefic conjunction anyways.... if Mars is combust, what we've got is an explosive combustion caused by the coming together of two fiery potent planets.

Here, I would like to ask if any body has ever had any experiences with graha-yudha ... I remember I read something like if a planet has entered graha yudha and defeated the Sun in planetary war, it actually becomes a source of power for the planet... I've never actually been able to apply that.
