Dasha means state,
it is Vimshottari Dasha which mean a tool for timing events promised in a chart based on the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon in that chart.
Vimshottari means 120 years. So the whole cycle of Vimshottari is for 120 years.

Dosha means a flaw. Dosha in Jyotish means a flaw present in the chart which tends to give negative effects to the native and this Dosha needs to be remedied.

Dosha in Ayurved means the Tridoshas - Kapha, Pitta and Vaat.

I was under the impression that the ayuveda and the jyotish astrology were related somehow. Someone in the ayurveda list I am on says they are but that they are way to complex to explain. So dosha would be like having manglik Mars with bad aspects?

Hi! Darla,
ofcourse they are related. But one has to be a very good Ayurvedic doctor and also a very good Jyotish for reading a chart on that basis. There are very few such qualified people around.

Yes Mangal or mangalik or Kuja is a dosha and it has to be remedied.
Same way for other doshas like Panchanga dosha, and other duryogas in the chart.

At first I thought you are talking about a new variant of a famous south indian snack!

Then it occurred to me that maybe you might have been talking to a Bengali astrologer! I know of Vimshottari Dasha (Dasa in south) which is a way of dividing lifetime into planetary periods. Bengalis generally would pronounce Dasha as something between Dosha and Dasha (pronounced like MS-DOS with an 'h' ergo DOSha.

Dosha literally (when non-bengalis say it!) means a defect or negative quality which vimshottari does not have! People do!!

Dear Darla,

Astrology is like a scrabble game. It is a collection of letters which can be utilized to create words that mean and can represent pretty much any discipline. Astrological alphabet (symbols) have been used to represent not just ayurveda but also other healing forms, Newtonian and Quantum (energy based) and all sorts and forms of disciplines (law, engineering, medicine, psychological sub-disciplines, etc).

If you invest in a beautiful compendium of wisdom named Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Buy the translation by G.C. Sharma, Sagar Publishers) very early in the first volume you will have the beginnings of the answer to your question. Please note that the doshas described there would be different from the qualities like air, fire etc that you are used to. The four quadruplicities as they are known are also utilized in jyotish but are different!
