When the sun is a functional benefic as he is for Leo or Sagittarius lagnas for eg, unless he is in the same nakshatra pada or degree as the combust planet, rather than give malefic results, he would impart a benefic influence.

When the combust planet is exalted or aspected by a very powerful benefic such as Vakra Jupiter, the defect is largely mitigated.

Conversely if the sun is weak vis a vis the conjunct planet, for instance sani-sun conjoint in Libra, (unless being within 2 deg of each other), the sun is powerless to spoil powerful sani!

Various analogies suggesting that the combust planet "gets hidden" and that the rays do not reach the earth are ill-founded...the fact remains, that a strong planet can pierce the rays of the sun and benefically influence the native in the above scenarios for instance.

well sorry if the actual positions are not useful but mercury gets combusted in two ways
when its in front of sun and when at the back (retro).similarly with venus but all others have to be behind the sun.
so how are the planet's rays still at work? just a doubt.

Dear fellow-member,

If planets only exerted their astrological influences through some physical energy or rays that were like 'light' and needed the source (or reflector as most planets are!) to be in the line of sight unobstructed, then jyotishis should be ignoring:

= the influences of all planets when they are in superior conjunction with sun (sun between earth and the planet)

= Each total solar eclipse should result in weakening or absence of whatever it is that sun represents in such an eclipse born nativity.

= Each individual should only be influenced be the planets that are on the 'risen' side (houses 7 to the ascending degree, for the remaining will be blocked by earth's enormous mass.
Particularly the influence of poornima moon in the case of all day borns!

Even in the Jyotish context the 'rays' or 'rashmis' are not shown as the rays that would deal with the visible vs invisible.

Good question, by the way!

all energy is not "visible" but is "experience-able" ('tangible' may limit the experience to senses!) in a positive or negative or any other way - like, when there is no light, there is darkness, when there is not enough water in the body we experience thirst yet even when there is enough water in body but sun/environment is too hot we experience thirst  - similarly when a planet is combust the effect that would happen would be the net resultant of the strength of the planet and the sun in the chart  - we simply cant say planets lose their strength always - what effect would be there would depend on the nature of the planets, where and how far they are positioned wrt Sun, even within the combustion range, whether the planet is retrograde or not, whether it is exalted or debilitated in the chart etc.

hands approximated to fire can provide warmth or burn them, colder hands take longer to get warmed, ice in pot will take longer to boil than hot water would - gold would glow in fire but plastic wouldnt. saturn (cold and inimical) closer to sun would behave differently than mars (hot and friendly) would....ok, all is not that simple - the concept of combustion is still under evolution in 'the human mind'.

Hello,

Interesting discussion on combustion, I must say !!

How would you analyse the combustion of Sun and Jupiter in the below chart?

30.12.1972,  11:19AM, Palghat (Kerala) Lat: 10.36N, Long: 076.42E

Jupiter is in its own house ins Saggirtus but heavily afflicted by Rahu and combusted by Sun, which is also a malefic.  Now the Sun is functional benefic (if i am not wrong), but again a weak dispositor. Would Jupiter would still be in a position to benefit the native in this case? What are the roles of Rahu and Sun ?

Thanks

Jeet
Will Combusted planet will be considered in Yogas or Doshas
