I am presently concerned about career issues, as I am trying to give my life some direction. One offer has come along for some shorter-term stuff at a location close to home. I also (potentially) have another offer for something more long-term doing something different.
I have also been exploring other options, most of which likely won't happen for months.

I was wondering what the outlook for the next 6-12 months is re: career, and if taking this shorter-term or longer-term offer would be in my best interests.

Basically, will it be enjoyable and lead to something more stable and/or permanent in the near future? Hopefully this will shed some light on the situation.

From the cards, both opportunities are interesting.
The shorter-term one will be easier and more enticing at first, but in the end there may be a need for more careful communication and interaction with o-workers as they may be some defensiveness here and some hyprocrisy in the work environment. Also this first option will take a lot out of you in terms of energy and possibly more spending of money involved as well.
The longer-term one may seem like a huge change from what you are sused to and at first you will feel a little disoriented and overhwhelmed and having to start from scratch, and also I sense you may have to be more aggressive and really assert yourself, but in the end you will receive good news and may start a new project or a have a new opportunity coming out of it altogether with which you will be extremely happy about.
