But I am still worried, because this last time I worked really hard and it didn't pay off, I am fearful that it won't pay off this time.

From your answer I think you have the right goal in mind.
Your first priority must me to get rid of the Quoted Thought, turn it around and say " I know I am good enough to see it true, and I will! "
To have a negative thought, like that, in your mind might one time or another lead to an excuse for given up.
You shall do an education in a profession where you are not allowed to do so.
You have to build your self confidence, because that will be a major factor in your profession.
You must learn to trust your opinions, because when you are in a life/death situation you can't hesitate, you can't argue with yourself....you must only know that you always are doing what you believe is best and that will equal to the best
Always when you study and get to a big problem....read the problem, start to solve other smaller problem and let your "brain" work on the bigger problem for a while on its own....many times this lead to a "snap" or door opener for the big problem, which might not had occur if you only concentrated on it.
And it is ok to "live" when you study, it is not always the amount of time you put into the study that count, equal important is your state of mood, that you feel refresh, that you don't sit study, thinking on a party you should have attended...if so...then maybe the party had been a better place
So I am sure you will manage this with good margins, if you put your mind into it, if you put it up as Your goal and that you believe in yourself!
Good luck
