Hi Guys,

Ok, to say the least the reading was spot on! This is the second time it happened!

Cedars, I use the original RW, maybe I get a bit flustered with the colours. You raised that we have only a few Cups cards, containing something. Cups, specifically, the Ace of Cups has a connotation to the Holy Grail. However, not proved! Therefore we need to look at the articles or referances made by Merlin the Great, in the time of King Arthur. . When we look at the Ace of Cups, we see a Rosecrucion Cross, on a biscuit, being delivered by a Dove, signifying spirit.

We also find Yods and little bells on the Cup. Maybe someone can shed light on the W engraved on the Cup!! Looking at the Queen of Cups. Her Cup is far more ornate, but sports the Cross on the top of the lid. Can we consider the cherubs as handles having a link to the Holy Grail and the Ark?

We also find little balls in a cluster---grapes? Now balls and bells? What about the panels on the Cup. I see Zodiac symbols? Then bells on the Ace--wedding bells. Balls on the Cup of the Queen, mmmmm? Interesting. count how many balls on each Cup!

More interesting, look at the base of each Cup. The ones on Ace and Queen, are round, all the others square. Temperance, is the only other Card having Cups with round stands. The Star has decanters. Eight of Cups, once again a man walking away with a wand.

Yes we see that the four Cups on Six of Cups is very conspicious. On the four of Cups, the three Cups in the front is exactly the same! In four of Cups, we see; Ace of Cups and three of Cups. Can we now consider that we have skipped Two of Cups, contained in four of Cups? In six of Cups we find, Ace, Two and four of Cups.

We know six of Cups is "reflection" and memories of the Past. Can we now perhaps draw the following conclusion; The four predominant Cups is a remebrance to a happy and blossoming relationship, which eventually turned out to be stagnant. Now, thinking back, you see the good experiences are far more, than the few unhappy days you had?

This is wonderfull. Having these discussions is so important.

Blessed be.

I see what you mean about the six of cups now.    When I first started to look at the six of cups long ago, I would look at it similar to the five of cups, where he is so focused on what he has lost instead of the cups he has already, then I saw the six of cups, the Ace of Cups on the pillar, you have lost, but there were wonderful moments that will never leave you hence the memories.    But anyway, I like the way you see it better, makes sense.    With the 8 of cups, the cups neatly stacked leaving behind all he ever loved, and I never noticed the wand he is leaving with!    That's amazing, the ace of wands.    I see the ace of wands symbolizing courage, because it takes a lot of courage to leave the past behind for something more meaningful!   And I like how the cups are separated, five on the bottom, two of cups and the ace of cups, perhaps what he is leaving behind.

Hi SL,

It is vital to look at the symbolism on the cards. Few readers really study the cards, or look for symbolism. Everything is intertwined and related, life is not a walk in the park, but contains all the ups and downs, spiritual paths and destruction we see in the cards.

But when a reader is blindly stuck to the face value of a card, they may very well give a reading, which raises more questions, and gives few answers.

This is also why, when I do a reading with the querant across the table, I give a broad outline, and after that I will sit down and start getting to the nitty gritties. Gem always used to have a chuckle when I say, I sleep over readings, but this is exactly why I don't just work on the fly!

Blessed be.

OK. Symbolism. Let us not get tooooo carried away with the symbolism aspect of the tarot cards. Whilst I agree symbolism is part of Tarot Academy; the depth of tarot mystery and its mysticism, but we can get carried away a bit too far when giving a reading to someone who does not give a hoot about how many moons does the High Priestess have on her head, or how many yods are falling from the sky. By the same token because all the flowers are facing towards the reader on the six of Cups with the exception of one which is facing inwards, should it always have a symbolic meaning? Can’t we simply see it as the artistry and imagination of the painter (Pamela Coleman)? Should there be a meaning for every single item or shape of things in the background? The tarot cards tell a story; we should also ‘look’ at the pictorial story that the artist has portrayed to trigger our intuition or to add ‘spice’ to the painting.

All I’m trying to say is that with too much emphasis on ‘symbolism’ we run the danger of making tarot a regimented and a methodical thing and cast away all intuition and our personal interpretation.

I agree the Major Arcana is full of symbolism which happens to be A.E. Waite’s personal conviction in the things he believed and participated in and wanted to portray them on the cards; but I would hesitate to declare or even explain to the querent that the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet gives such and such guidance to his/her question or the Masonic symbol is meant to bring calamity or joy to his/her life……getting the picture now?

By no means should we stop discussing these aspects of the tarot cards, but we should also be careful not to get carried away by stating things to the querent that would only complicate their understanding of a simple reading they asked for in the first place about a particular aspect of their life.

Let us not stop these discussions by all means, but let us also not frighten the newcomers to the tarot world.

Payewacker: I respect your deep knowledge of the Tarot and I will be the first to insist that we carry on with these discussions.

Newcomers: Please do not be intimidated with the depth of the tarot academy; carry on with your learning process the way you know and in your own pace. Take part in the discussions as much as you are able to contribute. We all learn from each other; there is no doubt about it. Also,  trust your intuition!!!!!!!
