The veil or mask of life is perpetuated in change, transformation and passage from lower to higher, and this is more fitly represented in the rectified Tarot by one of the apocalyptic visions than by the crude notion of the reaping skeleton. Behind it lies the whole world of ascent in the spirit. The mysterious horseman moves slowly, bearing a black banner emblazoned with the Mystic Rose, which signifies life. Between two pillars on the verge of the horizon there shines the sun of immortality. The horseman carries no visible weapon, but king and child and maiden fall before him, while a prelate with clasped hands awaits his end.
There should be no need to point out that the suggestion of death which I have made in connection with the previous card is, of course, to be understood mystically, but this is not the case in the present instance. The natural transit of man to the next stage of his being either is or may be one form of his progress, but the exotic and almost unknown entrance, while still in this life, into the state of mystical death is a change in the form of consciousness and the passage into a state to which ordinary death is neither the path nor gate. The existing occult explanations of the 13th card are, on the whole, better than usual, rebirth, creation, destination, renewal, and the rest |

Thanks Cassie, but the deceased is not closely related to me; it is a distant relation and I hardly knew her.

I was reciting what the book said in the text (from Pictures from the Heart by Sandra A. Thomson) I think maybe it was duel naming the card, just like "coins" and "pentacles" can be duel stated at times for clarification and be confusing instead of clarifying when that happens.
There is a golden-cloaked priest on the Death card itself from RW though. Do you find that significant?
Sometimes it isn't what the book says it's how you interpret it. If the first reaction was the picture of the Death card itself (which for me some reason the golden priest on the Death card stood out when I saw it online) maybe you could examine that thought, if it did occur to you.

Hi Kimme,
When talking about the Death card, we need to consider all the symbolish contained in the card as well as all the links to other cards.
This card is probably one of the Majors that contain the most symbolism, eg:
The dead King: King of Cups---Scorpio--fixed,
The armooured figure of Death, being gold---A divine messenger, entering from the North-West corner--a Masonic ritual for an entering apprentice.
The Rosy Cross reversed, attached to a golden pole--"Wand"
The bridle of the horse with skull and bones--The way in which Masons are buried,
The "Priestly figure"--also submitted to physical death, Trumping the Kings and "Emperor",
The figure of Strength, Trumping the Hierophant.
The White Horse--Purity, bound by the figure of Death,
The Head of the Horse "in-line" with the North-West corner of the first tower, a masonic ritual in building, a person used to be killed and placed under the "cornerstone" of buildings in that orientation.
I refer you to my earlier posting on the Death card, specifically the part where I discuss the Hebrew Aleph-Beth, and it's implications.
The link to the Emperor shows it being in the Archetypal level of energy, not in our "Space-time", but in your own mind!---Intuition?
The Death card itself being in our "Space-time" in the existential level.
This card uplifts to the Fool in the Cosmic level of energy--beyond our "space-time" in the fifth card, 23. Tav--Cross---- This is the fifth house of movement in the third nine levels of energy, and is attached to the first final of the Hebrew Aleph-Beth.
I will do the full expansion on the Death card and post it under "Tarot discussions and ideas" a separate forum under Tarot.
You can go to "How much do you want to learn about Tarot" on this forum you can follow how the Hebrew Aleph-Beth links the letters and numeric values. Once you clearly understand this, you will look at Tarot in a different light altogether.
Blessed be.
