A disconnect is very important before you get into a reading for yourself or for someone who is very close to you. It is very important to have a clear mind before you get into a reading, where the output matters to you, where you hold a stake.
Meditation has helped me disconnect, I usually spend sometime meditating before I do a reading for myself. After which I focus on the question at hand, ask the cards for guidance on the best course of action and create the spread.

I think that the main problem with self-readings if that you usually use them to "confirm" something you already believe, and so, you interpret the cards in order to suit you. So, I gave up and bought a tarot desk only for myself, "The Tarot of the Spirit". I'm the only one who touches it and I only read it to myself. It has become a tool for meditation and self-knowledge but I don't use it to predict, only for advice.
