Hello,

I have only been using tarot for about a week and I'd like a little help with the interpretation of this simple 3 card spread:

Past- 5 of Pentacles
Present- The Sun
Future- The Wheel

The situation is a relationship (or, more specifically, an evolving relationship) but I don't want to disclose any more details.

My first intuitive response was positive; it read to me that suffering and problems are to a large degree receding and there is hope on the horizon, but that difficult choices will have to be made to maintain that.

I decided to draw a clarifying card and I drew:

Clarifier- The Hermit

Any help from more experienced tarot readers at interpreting this reading would be helpful both in regards to the specific situation but would also help me to inform my own interpretations in the future.

In general, your interpretation is correct fordasgard.
With the Wheel of Fortune, I see things are changing; the relationship is or will be taking a different form - whether it is in the form of maturity or understanding each other better.  Re your clarification card of The Hermit, I feel it is time for you to gather some knowledge about yourself, as a person, as a soul and as to what you really want in life at this stage and within this relationship.  I am not suggesting that you become a hermit or a mystic and go into solitude, but it is suggesting that you seek knowledge within yourself - something that no outsider can give it to you, a bit like the Hierophant - but only you.  As to what this inner englightenment or knowledge is, only you would know that.

well from what i know of the tarot the 5 of pentacles (being in the past card slot) usually means self doubt, the sun (being the present) stands for happiness; and the wheel (future) stand for things looking up and the timing being right. as for the hermit usually means not to rush think things through you know whats best for you.
 hopefully this helps

happiness is in your hands not the cards remember that. the cards are more of a guide line to keep you in the right direction.
