I'm just beginning with Tarot - does anyone have any advice for a new learner?

Well that is a very broad question and the answer would take several books of writing, why not start with the Mystic Board Free tarot course? Lots of information there

I suggest sitting down with the cards,
Knowing that they are doorways,
Meditate on one card a day, when you go to sleep, try to remember your dreams and how they give you insight on the meaning of that card,
After meditating on that card, write out what it means to you,,
After all that,, then read what the card means from the books.

for sure take the free class offered here by Gem!

and everything i say below will make for sense.

get to know your cards, touch them daily. some people even talk to them. don't worry to much about the meaning of the cards from the book. ask yourself what they they mean to me. good luck and hope to see you around more.
