Hey, Tollyt
I can only give you my own perspective on this, but I will give it a try.
As far as I have been able to ascertain, there seem to be mainly two Tarot styles: the Divinatory one, which I think must be the oldest and most widespread; your reading seems to have been of that kind. And then something called Tarot of Evolution, or Evolutive, in which the cards are used as a means to make contact with the querent's unconscious or inner guide. This is a more modern and psychological approach and it is the only one I am comfortable with, because I believe a reading should help the querent to understand and work on any worrisome situation, decision or changes in life.
Both work the same way, really. The reader will explain several meanings for each card, or at least those that seem more relevant for you at the time. You, as the seeker of answers from your inner mind, should hopefully listen with an open ear. Your unconscious is listening right along and will point out to you any links from the cards and their meanings to your present situation. That should give you an "Eureka" experience, which it seems you did not get much from your last reading.
At that point, some people choose to keep the "coincidence" to themselves and see what else the reader can "divinate". Unluckily, that might prevent the seeker from making the most of a reading. If you choose to share your feelings about the cards with the reader, then he/she can really help you understand the rest of the cards, or the messages from yourself to yourself.
Because the point is not to see how much the reader "sees" about your past and future, but to understand your present situation, view it from different angles and get some advice on how to proceed.
Of course, that is only my opinion and the way I like to work with the cards for myself and others. Although, if nothing is worrying me specially, I also enjoy my friends doing divination for me (I just do not feel comfortable doing divination for others: I do not trust it much, either).
Hopefully, someone else will answer you from the opposite point of view so that you can compare and see if you would maybe like to try reading for yourself or others.
Nice to meet you
