Hi,
It may sound strange but I have bee attaching the following meanings to directions which the characters face in the cards:
to the left: they talk more to the emotional sign, the intuitive side
to the right: they talk more to the rational, mind-side.
facing you: they are neutral. Or point to a more rigid message of moral or legal codes.
Cheers

Interesting points raised here on dierction of looks of the cards.
Hey, Payewacker, good to see you back.
To take your exmaple of Four of Swords: this card in itself is 'taking time out' card and in the RW deck the man is looking neither way. His face is upwards, albeit eyes closed.
Similarly with the Ten of Wands, he is not looking at the reader. In fact, we dont see his face at all, and he is sort of avoiding us, almost saying, ''I have enough on my shoulders and I dont have time to look at you''.
To me they are both avoidance looks; the first being willfully going inwards and away from the rest and the second has only time for himself and the load of his burden.
We have to be careful if we make it as a rule of thumb the way the characters look, although it should all be viewed intuitively at the time of the reading and the way the cards are laid out. Although, I agree, it is something that triggers thought.
Cheers PW.
