Hi Cedars, i classify the suits in the following manner:
Swords--Winter, element Air,
Cups--Autumn, element water,
Pentacles-- spring, element earth,
Wands--summer, element Fire.
The asigning of seasons and directions is different from one deck to another.
In wikipedia search for Classic element, you will get to the site, where the elements are described, by the greeks.
The way in which i also look at the elements and seasons is to consider the qualities of the guardians of each watchtower, of which you have south, west, east and north.

My goodness Payewacker, you are really into the science of this.
Thank you for your inputs and I will try to memorise them.
You said '' I classify them''..... is this from your experience or is this written somewhere? I have read conflicting seasons etc in a book I read, a day-course I went to and my most valued internet tarot lessons from Joan Bunning which I tend to follow. When I saw different interpreatations of Seaons by the others, it was then when I got confused.
I have it as follows:
Wands = Autumn
Cups = Summer
Swords = Winter
Pentacles = Spring
The seasons almost follow the theme of each group, I suppose.

Hi Cedars, yes i did read it in a book. But studying Rider Waite you can see why each suit is assigned. The elemental of air is represented by sylphs on the throne of the King and Queen, the elemental for water is represented by the children with fishtails or fishes in or on the cups cards. For pentacles you find gnomes all around, and then wands is salamanders.
pent. is therefore spring.
Cups is autumn,
Swords is winter,
and Wands is fire--definitely hot and dry--summer.
Blessed be
