Reading Reversals in Tarot

Hi.  I'm wondering how others view reversals.   As I understand it, they're not "opposites" so to speak, but rather as if the momentum of the card is blocked or in difficulty.  I would really appreciate a way to understand them in theory, so I can apply it any card that comes up reversed.  Any ideas?
