Do the court cards relate directly to the male/female that they are.  For example, is the Queen usually a female, and is the knight usually a male person involved. Or are they any person that is representing those particular attributes. Hope this makes sense....

I don't believe that you have to use the male court cards to indicate specifically a male person.  Every person, male or female has both traits in them.  For example, we each have a logical and mechanical male side, while at the same time we each have a nurturing, emotional female side.  If you are reading for a female, (or for yourself and you are a female), and you draw a male court card, it might be that the aspect of the male self in this person (or you) is trying to get your attention for one reason or another.
Mary K. Greer in her book, Tarot for Yourself, points out that one person can have a myriad of different courts depicting several aspects of a person's life, according to the roles (he/she) plays.
