looks like a crocidille to me. Sobek in Egyptian mythology.
I do remember something about the flood in Indian mythology too.

that symbol definitly bears a stricking resmblance to a hopi symbol for the stairs to the sky. It can be found usualy in pictographs in New Mexiceo and Arizona. the symbology of it is that the first people ascended from the unerworld to this world via those steps and tail like apendage represents the sky or heven.
