I think both party are right.
I agree that helping without expecting return is "Helping", and helping with expecting of return is "investing", this be both economic and in moral ways.
On the other hand, most Religions has that their congregation shall contribute with 10% of their income to the church, they also work active to secure donation or inheritance from their members, with promise about "a better after life"
This has led to the fact that some Religions are among the riches "company" in the world, can build Great cathedrals, when even millions of their followers live on the starvation threshold, and still contribute to their church......should it not go the other way too?

To constantly give with no return at all is to kill the messenger of love and hope. To expect return for the giving is to diminish its potential. Somewhere here we are to learn the lessons of worthiness of all things given to us and the ability to receive in humility and love from those willing and able to give.
