If our birth mother has aborted a fetus before its birth, does this mean we have karmic connections to souls we have not experienced this earthly life with? Just what does it mean for a soul when it is aborted, what happens?

Well you've got a doozy of a question there , so much to cover ,so let's see if I can keep it simple and accurate.
Firstly there is generally speaking Karma with other souls that are not in this life-experience, guides, ancestors and others whether you are completing your Karma or not.
To the question of abortion. The soul is not individualised until it takes its first breath.Throughout the whole period of gestation the Soul is busy overseeing the formation of the physical body, adjusting to its surroundings, and learning both in the upper realms and on the physical level. there is very little that is going on around the Soul that it is not aware of. The decision to abort a pregnancy is one that the Soul is aware of. Sometimes it may be the whole and complete purpose of their experience in the physical world , that's it that's as far as they want to come . The reasons for this are many but simply it may be to bring learning to the mother and other members of the family to assist in the release  of memories.
If the decision is not in accord with the highest good of the divine plan of the entering soul, but this is still accounted for, then the lessons and learning offered by this individual will have to balanced at another time and perhaps place . It is possible that the same individual will come again as another child. Whatever Karmic links you share with this individual can be taken care of in other ways , dispensation is offered.

I have a friend.  When he was a child, he had horrible dreams.  He described them to his mother, and she about fainted.  He had described exactly what had happened when she had had an abortion years before he was born.  Through readings and the actual description and such, they discovered that he was the same baby she had aborted back then (if that makes sense)  That the universe had decided that they should be together and sent him to her again.
Granted, not something I would want to remember, but it did bring them closer together.

It is a big question, one that we can only listen to the so very many varied views, and then decide for ourselves.

For me the way I see it is this, our Soul Self chooses when we are to be born, and what life we are to live, we have a purpose a mission or a lesson to learn,

That said souls may enter the body we are to live in at various times, some may hover near a mother prior to conception, others may not enter the body we are to be born into until we take our first breath, at others times we may enter at the moment of conception, or at 3 months or at 8 months, or whenever we choose during this process.

Very often I "hear" babies that are looking to be born, and so far every child I "heard" over the last 20 plus years has been born.

So for me while I personally feel that abortion is not should not be a form of birth control,  it is going to happen so are miscarriages, and in those instances it just means it was not time for a child to be born.

or if in some instances the soul did enter the body only to be aborted or miscarried, it is due to the fact that the soul wished to learn something by living such a short life.

I know my brother's soul did live in his body, he only lived for 3 days, I even meet who he was reincarnated as, he had a reason to be born and live that life, and yes the child he was reincarnated as was somoene who knew he was my brother, there was a lesson to be shared with my parents a purpose,

part of the purpose of living such a short life the first time was that we needed a connection between us, so that it was not strange that we recognized each other when he lived the life he needed to live next, it is why his mother and I meet and became friends.

If he had lived as my brother then he would not have been able to do what he was to do as this other person, if he had not been born as my brother at all, then he and I would not have made the connection we made, and something we were able to do together in sharing with his mother, would not have happened,  

There was a spiritual lesson he, his mother, and his sisters, and I were sharing, something we learned together and part of that was dealing with knowing and learning and understanding about past lives.

So the soul chooses when it is to be born which lives it is to live, and sometimes it chooses to live extremely short lives, and other times babies physical bodies are created but no soul is ready to live that life, so those babies do not get born, they are aborted or miscarried.
