بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
"When a person sees a reflection of apples in the river,
and the sight of them fills her skirt with real apples,
how should that which she saw in the river be a fantasy,
when a hundred sacks have been filled by her vision?
Don't pay attention to the body, and don't act
like those deaf and dumb ones*
who disbelieved in the Truth when it came to them."
- Mawlana Jalal'uddin al-Rumi q.s. -
*Holy Quran, al-Baqarah, 171
From Mathnawi VI:3194-3196, in a version by Camille and Kabir
Helminski "Rumi: Jewels of Remembrance", Threshold Books, 1996
"We are all weak servants. My advice for you is to ask for truth, it will lead people to the Lord of Heavens. Through truth you can reach Absolute Truth. I am not saying that everyone's belief is founded on truth. No! There are many false beliefs which lead people into the wrong direction, far away from truth. We need learned people in the universities and in the governments. Everyone should be asking for truth, Christians should ask for truth, Jews should ask for truth, Muslims should ask for truth. Everyone should be a truth-seeker. It will be the first question which Allah will ask His servants, 'If you found truth, what did you do with it? I gave you a perfect being in your physical body, mind and heart. Did you use it to find truth, or not? Or did you waste your whole life uselessly?'
Be a truth-seeker!"
- As-Sayyid Muhammad Nazim q.s. -
"Is there a window from heart to heart?
After all, the shaykh sees your thoughts
as if through a window."
- Mawlana Jalal'uddin al-Rumi q.s. -
From Mathnawi II:1587-1588 in a version by Camille &
Kabir Helminski, 'Rumi: Daylight', Threshold Books
"The Lord beckons us through a Divine Love and Attraction which has been implanted in our hearts, a Love that may be understood and felt consciously as Divine by some, and only indirectly as love for His creatures or creation by others. In either case the pull of our heartstrings draws us to those Mercy Oceans, just as our physical bodies feel drawn to a warm and gentle sea. By means of the revelation of Holy books and through the example set by Prophets and Saints, all human beings have been brought in contact with those oceans."
- As-Sayyid Muhammad Nazim q.s. -
"Didn't I say, "Don't go there; I am your friend.
In this mirage of existence, I am the fountain of life."
Even if your anger takes you a hundred thousand years away,
in the end you will return, for I am your goal.
Didn't I say, "Don't be content with earthly forms;
I am the designer of the intimate chamber of your contentment."
Didn't I say, "I am the sea, and you are a single fish;
don't strand yourself on dry land; I am your clear sea."
Didn't I say, "Don't get caught in the trap like a helpless bird;
I am the power of flight – your feet and your wings."
Didn't I say, "They will waylay you and make you cold;
I am the fire and your warm desire."
Didn't I say, "They will implant their qualities in you
until you forget that the best qualities are here."
Didn't I say, "You do not know from what direction
your affairs are put in order."
I am the Creator beyond directions.
If light is in your heart, find your way home.
If you are of God, know your Benefactor."
- Mawlana Jalal'uddin al-Rumi q.s. -
In a version by Kabir Edmund Helminski
"Love is a Stranger", Threshold Books, 1993
"Without His Love, one cannot find the eternal Truth,
Without finding the eternal Truth, one cannot receive His entire Love;
Find the Truth through Him, the Loving One -
Find Love through Him, the Truth;
Allahul-Waduud, Allahul-Haqq:
'Allah is the Loving One, Allah is the Truth';
Find Him through Him, meet Him through Him,
Allahul-Waduud, Allahul-Haqq."
- Wiyoso Hadi al-Jawi al-Jakarti -
See how the hand is invisible while the pen is writing;
the horse careening, yet the rider unseen;
the arrow flying, but the bow is out of sight;
individual souls existing,
while the Soul of souls is hidden.
- Mawlana Jalal'uddin al-Rumi q.s. -
From Mathnawi II:1303-1304 in a version by Camille &
Kabir Helminski, 'Rumi: Daylight', Threshold Books
So long as you have not contemplated the Creator,
you belong to created beings;
but when you have contemplated Him, created beings belong to you.
- Ibn 'Ata'Allah q.s, Hikam -
