What you all say is true. That it all depends how one handles money and material comforts. If one is contented with what his past karmas offer him and if his pursuit is sincere then these are not impediments.
BUT
For the final stages of Nirvana/ Enlightenment/ final bliss unless the seeker is oblivious of all such material possessions and is unperturbed , with or with out it, money will act as an impediment. This is because, even stray thoughts connected with material comforts will affect the final push into the final goal of spirituality.

No. But in our perception of them they can be. If we place our value in money and possessions rather than in our own expression as loveness, they will become an impediment.
