What you all say is true. That it all depends how one handles money and material comforts. If one is contented with what his past karmas offer him and if his pursuit is sincere then these are not impediments.
BUT
For the final stages of Nirvana/ Enlightenment/ final bliss unless the  seeker is oblivious of all such material possessions and  is unperturbed , with or with out it, money will act as an impediment. This is because, even stray thoughts connected with material comforts will affect the final push into the final goal of spirituality.

So you are saying it is not the object but the attachment which impedes?  I agree.

No.  But in our perception of them they can be.  If we place our value in money and possessions rather than in our own expression as loveness, they will become an impediment.

As a materialist i must say that material objects have little to no value, they are merely means to an end as it were, in most cases our own happiness (or in cases of shelter, food, water survival) and it is us the users of the material object that give them meaning and value.

All that aside i would say that yes in most cases material goods are an impediment to spirituality as most versions generally require some sort of poverty be inflicted ones self so having stuff kinda goes against that doctrine dosent it?

I dont understand though why they should have to be in the way, you're searching for a higher truth/existance/whatever so why should something as trivial as say a car get in the way? By distracting you? if so then drive the car or use it and get said distraction out of your head, if you cant stop thinking about the possession then instead of rejecting it due to your spiritual quest why not embrace it as you go on said quest. Giving away the objects too will only result in thinking about the object, not to mention seeing as they impede your spirituality why inflict these material burderns on others?
