Futhark means the runic alphabet. They are called so because the first 6 letters spell out the very word. Fuþark is the Scandinavian version, fuþorc the Anglo-Saxon version of this name, and these are sometimes spelled futhark or futhorc, with the 'th' representing the third rune 'þ', pronounced as in Modern English 'thorn'.
There are three main versions of futharks: Elder, Younger, and Anglo-Saxon. The Elder version has 24 characters. The Younger version has 16 characters. The Anglo-Saxon runes are based on the 24 letter runic alphabet, but some sets are also used with 28 characters.
