I guess that there are bad effects possible because you may discover something that will become a huge burden. That is why in my opinion there must be a purpose other than curiosity to rake up the past. If you really feel that without it you can't improve your current incarnation then go on, but if you just want an adventure then try to live your present life as best as you can!
