When someone says they are 'grounding' and 'protecting' themselves what are they doing and why?

There are so many ways and all really help us to 'hold the moment'  stay stable and centred without adverse reactions from external influences.

When someone says they are 'grounding' and 'protecting' themselves what are they doing and why?

Oy readers digest version alert: I do not ever recall hearing grounding and protecting, but grounding and centering. Protecting is a separate issue. A person who is grounding can be doing one or both of two things. Grounding out excess or errant energy or connecting with the underworld, the ground or the earth. To create a channel flowing in one direction. To center is one of two things to find the homeostasis within oneself so work can be done be it magic or reiki or what have you or making the connection above so that energy flows in both directions. Most often I operate in a Druid cosmology where we use a Tree as a focus. We are the tree with the roots in the underworld and the branches in the aboveworld.

Protecting, as in shielding, well, as with most things, depends on intent...

How can we protect ourselves? And from what?

More readers digest versions: Shielding is a great way to protect yourself, from stress, errant energy around us, environmental toxins. If you can imagine it you can shield or protect from it. Using energy to expand and/or seal your Aura is a good way to protect yourself. Calling your guides and/or gods if you use them is another. Runes are another. The possibilities are limited to what you can imagine only.

Is it always necessary when working with reiki or other energy therapies?

Grounding and Centering should be your catch all for everything, before you go to work, before that meeting, before you write an email, before ritual, before bed. Yes Grounding and Centering should be something you do  every time with Reiki and beyond.
