Not that I wish anyone to misunderstand or misquote me into thinking that I am being permissive to drugs (which the normal brain has in plenty in the natural peptides it produces which have a variety of functions and which most of the artificial, way more potent and destructive chemicals try to mimic -- that is how they act in the neurochemical system), even substances like nicotine or caffeine but I think people are again mixing up things! The healing energy is not influenced or enhanced or attenuated by these. What changes is the channel and in most cases of human channels their ability to serve as good channel varies. Of course that is critical in a pragmatic sense. But it does not have to become a limiting factor in special cases! Look at some of the Shamanic healers, for instance!
In general, given the inherently weak mien of most human healers (regardless of their commercial bravado and so on!) for most individuals it is best to remain a bit (or more!) spiritual and gentle when serving Mother Nature during the privileged role of channeling Her healing energies! Particularly if the 'baking' is not complete yet ;-)
I think a lot of it is mind over matter too. If I quit smoking, the withdrawal effects would probably affect my reiki more negatively (in the short term, anyway) than the actual nicotine. Obviously I would never smoke while giving a session! :-) I think sometimes alcohol can relax you, "open doors" and make you more receptive to spiritual happenings. Obviously, too much might make you sense or see things that are not there! I tried smoking pot when I was younger and saw animals everywhere. I hate the stuff and do not take drugs now, it was just an experiment, but I think balance is vital.
One of my teachers had the stance that if you smoke or if you drink and you stop suddenly you are less able to carry out your duties. In my path substances have been used. It's all about perception, about the substance and how it affects you. Many of our best healers are our most broken humans.....it doesn't make them less it makes them understand more and have greater compassion. An ex addict who turned healer can greatly help someone through addiction with Reiki much better than someone who hasn't been there. A complete circle as it were. Mind, body and soul. Energy does not have human constraints in my view of it. I would not suggest tying one on then giving Reiki to a someone recovering however. My Grove did a Reiki share last night for a woman who needed us. I smoke cigarettes. I took a break after an hour and a half. I was losing focus because I have an addiction. Good or bad it is what it is. I do plan to quit. I gave up meat, dairy, processed food, soda, etc etc for the purpose of cleansing myself. BUT even Ghandi said he could never be a true fruitarian as his love for goat dairy kept him from it. We are human and must work through that constraint aspiring to be better and by healing not only do we better our clients but also ourselves.
Namaste,
Anna

Wise words sister!
The correct spelling though is GANDHI --- ;-)
I know I know: What is in a name? What is in details or accuracy??
Thanks for your contribution to the thread.

Hi Anna, I just replied to a thread on psychic readings and alcohol lol, now here I am on drink and reiki. Not sure why, but for me reiki and drink don't go. Although I find that whatever my condition I can use my own natural healing abilities to help others. I find that if I am consciously going to be using reiki then I try and be as pure as possible. Probably the teaching I had for my masters, nag nag nag live pure and reiki way of life, honour, love and vegetarian too.
Not sure about the smoking, but for me I would hate to have a treatment from someone smelling of smoke! But then I'm a proud ex-smoker, so it can be done
