Hello Peter,
Isn't that the usual story, whatever you are involved in with life? One or very few do all the work, and most of the rest of them complain and do not take any active part towards improving matters.
I am sorry if this all sounds too cynical to you, but I have learnt this through painful first hand experience, and while I know your intentions in arranging this festival are only the best ones, I feel that you are going to get very little constructive help either in the way of extra funds or with regards to any of the countless jobs which need to be done in order to give the festival the maximum chance of being a successful one.
I sense that whatever support and assistance you receive will need to come from outside the people who are attending the celebration. You badly need to get the local community and business people involved with the festival in any way you can. Perhaps you can use it's tourist drawing potential to the region, although if as you mentioned in your posting you are attempting to promote an alternative lifestyle against which the people with the money has some degree of intolerance and are not so broad minded as yourself, then I do see challenging times ahead for you, but I wish you well.
I also do not know the exact time scale involved before this festival is to be held, so this may determine whether any suggestions which I offer you would be practical ones. If you still have several months to go then you probably have far more options available to you to raise the money, compared to if it is less than a month away. Of course raising enough funds is only one aspect of organising such an event, but without those funds anything you can do is going to be basically a waste of time and effort.
On the basis of this reading alone, if you still have more than a month before the festival, then you have roughly a 50% chance of it being a successful and financially profitable one, but if it is any closer than that I feel that the probability rapidly falls away with each day less than that.
If it does fail to live up to your expectations this time, while it may be tempting you must not accept total responsibility for this. Nor should you interpret it to mean that if you had a longer time to get this festival organised next year and that if this time more people were willing to chip in to help you, that it would similarly be destined to fail.
Sorry that I cannot offer you anything like a guarantee either way,
