Hi Alex,
And we are equally delighted that you chose to become a valued member and contributor to these MB forums.
I was under the impression that the compensation for that type of work was quite reasonable, especially in light of the many added benefits that companies provide as an incentive to get enough people to do what is very hard and dirty work, and a socially isolated existence at least for 3 months at a time.
While I understand that you are generally unhappy with the job you are currently doing, could I ask if it was originally only intended as either a stop gap measure until you could get something better on the mainland, or was it instead a case of dire financial circumstances which you feel made it necessary to take the first job opportunity which came along?
Whether or not you would have a chance of being offered a better job on the mainland largely depends on whether or not you have applied for any. This in turn would depend on your qualifications, skills and previous work experience. Also it would be a good idea to contact a career advisor to help you to best match all these to the types of jobs most readily available in the area in which you choose to live.

Do you really feel trapped all the time, or just some of the time? It is not so much that you don't fit into the world, but more likely it is a case of you not being able or willing to accept what are the world's "values" as your own.
I feel that the word for this feeling which is almost in epidemic proportion especially amongst people who frequent sites such as this one is ALIENATION - a feel as though you have been marooned and left to your own devices on an alien planet, where nobody understands you and few people appear to care. This feeling would certainly be made much worse by the isolation which your present job forces upon you for three months at a time, but it is quite possible to be surrounded by people 24/7 and still feel trapped and painfully alone. The human mind itself can become your prison if you allow it to. One from which it appears that escape is possible.
What I am attempting to say here is that continuing to focus on your isolation and feelings of being trapped will only tend to attract the very condition which you most fear into your world. Many actual prisoners in long term solitary confinement have discovered that it is possible to break the cycle of negative thoughts and feelings by temporarily distracting their minds with memories of happier and more positive times in their lives.
While you must concentrate while on the job for reasons of personal safety and I would not suggest that you should daydream while doing so, perhaps you could more effectively use your leisure time visualising in extreme detail in which direction you would like your life to move over the next few years. Use all of your inner senses and make it seem as real as if you were already there, and I believe that by doing this regularly at least you will start feeling better about your life in general. Once you start feeling that you are moving again in the right general direction for you, I think that your increased feelings of self confidence will eventually do wonders for your chances of being a successful job applicant on the mainland.
Another way of expressing this is that when we feel better about ourselves and feel more in harmony with what we believe is our life's purpose, that we then tend to attract people and things which are most consistent with our own increased feelings of self esteem. If we come to believe that we are perfectly acceptable as we are, and that we therefore deserve to find a renewed sense of our life having a purpose and lasting happiness, our early release from the prison of our own minds is almost guaranteed. A healthy well balanced assessment of yourself (without believing you are God's gift to women) is also often particularly attractive to the ladies?
Wishing you good health and increasing happiness in whatever job you are currently doing,
