I completely agree with you that this emotionally distancing yourselves works both ways, but unfortunately to try to determine exactly why John is appearing to hold himself back would require a third party reading, which is not permitted on this site.
To do so without John's knowledge and written permission would be seen by many readers including myself as an invasion of his right to his privacy. Even his thoughts are off limits, if indeed psychic readers were also mind readers (which we are not).
