Job Offer to good to be true?

I met a wonderful friend who has now offered me one of those "sounds too good to be true" kind of jobs.  As we all know, they usually end up being untrue.  However, he's very honest and really believes that I deserve this opportunity.

I don't know what to do. It's SO very tempting, but the job I have now is comfortable and secure.  I've asked for guidance and the answer seems very unclear.

I would very much appreciate any insight anyone here could give me on this. Thank you so much for reading!

Bless you.
Jen

Hi Jen,

If the job you currently have is as comfortable and secure as you tell us it is (what job is secure these days), then I would also be cautious about going into this without your eyes fully opened. However, I would advise you not to continue to take the attitude that most too good to be true kind of jobs turn out to be just that. As long as it does not give your present employer an excuse for letting you go because you are too distracted from the job you have already got by making preliminary enquiries about another, I would not be so hasty in possibly throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

In other words, I feel that by ignoring the possibility that while this different job may not be quite what you are looking for with regard to reaching your future career goals, you may be doing  so at your own peril, and denying yourself of further opportunities for personal growth and development. Even if you are turned down on your application for this position your friend his so enthusiastic about you applying for, it could allow you to get your foot in the door.

Especially if there are no further opportunities for promotion or career development in your present position and the other company  does provide openings for you to climb a few rungs higher your career ladder (if that is what you wish to do), I feel that it would be in your best interests to at least get your name and professional reputation better known to those people in the company who will conduct job interviews when a more suitable job for a person of your particular qualifications and skills eventually becomes available some time in the medium term future (next 5 years or so).

Get as much information beforehand about the other company and the job on offer before attending the interview, but do not see not getting the job this time as necessarily having been a total waste of your time time and effort. There is no indication on the basis of this reading that if you submitted a formal application, that you would not at least be granted an interview.

Without knowing who the other applicants are, I would not however like to predict whether or not you will get this particular job. But a successful interview now could still be of great benefit to you further down the road! Do not allow your understandable doubts and fears to overly cloud your judgement in deciding whether or not the other job is worth applying for?

Good luck with your interview (although if you are well prepared then fortune will I believe play a relatively minor role in the process as a whole),

Its a good offer.
I can understand why is in the too good to be true pile.
He is a good soul and he is genuine in his intentions. But EOT is right you need to research to make sure the offer substainable.
I believe it will lead to good things but you are the one who has to decide on the leap of faith.
Cheers Pete

Thank you both SO much for your insight and advice, I will definately look in to it a bit more.  The job I have now is comfortable, but I am not treated all that well by my boss. However, I do my job well and most everyone ELSE recognizes that.  This other job would offer me something completely different and although still in transportation, its a completely different angle from where I currently am at.  It might be interesting!

I will look into it more and EOT, you are right, if I don't get the job the interview experience is just as beneficial!

Thank you again!!  I am so blessed to have found this site and to have met all the wonderful good souls here.
