I only have 1 question...I'll tell the story to go along with it.

My boyfriend broke up with me 2 days ago. He said he was lost and confused and the relationship "didn't feel right" anymore. Yesterday, however, he told me he "still loves me and can't stop thinking about me". Today he hasn't talked to me at all. I want to know if anything will ever happen between us again. If you need more info, I can give it to you.

Welcome Chelsea,

Your boyfriend is telling you the complete truth here. If he was not as confused as he honestly admits he is about exactly what he wants and expects from his relationships he would not be telling you one day that he feels that your relationship is no longer right, tell you on the next day that he still loves you and cannot stop thinking about you, and on the next day completely stop talking to you.

You did not mention what age your boyfriend is compared to yourself, but although my feelings are that your relationship still has an above average chance of succeeding and of being a relatively happy one, I think that you need to blame your stop start type relationship mainly on lack of experience on both your parts. Don't blame your boyfriend or yourself entirely for the problems found in a very large proportion of close human relationships?

If every relationship in which there was some feelings of confusion failed, nobody would be ever get to having a long term relationship. Do not expect the road to true love to always be an easy and straight one, and you will therefore not be so disappointed and down hearted when conflicts, and the inevitable misunderstandings arise. I am afraid that especially at your tender age (no offence is intended by this observation) communication breakdowns happen all the time, and it does not usually get much better as we grow older.

Too many people (both women and men) try to read each other's minds when there would be far less communication problems if we only could honestly tell each other how we feel, rather than continually beating around the bush. If you want to determine the truth for yourself, instead of possibly worrying yourself endlessly about something which might never have crossed his mind, ASK HIM?

Thank you very much. He turns 18 in 2 months.

I've been talking to him a lot, and he hasn't been acting like himself at all. He's very busy with swimming (on the school swimteam) and preparing for a big triathalon that'z in 2 months. I think he's over-doing it. He has swim practice every day after school, then a lot of work, and he has to wake up really early every day. I think that's what it is but I still don't know what to do, I'm the only one that would know this.

I agree that communication breakdowns are a big problem at my age, I always tried to tell him what was on my mind and I told him to let me know what was on his.

Dear Chelsea,

Especially at your ages it is often difficult to tell your partner exactly what is on your mind, when you yourself are often not quite certain of what you are thinking about any subject at that time.

People often greatly complicate things much further by saying one thing, then doing the complete opposite.

No wonder then that misunderstandings and breakdowns in communication are so frequent amongst human beings in general, and specifically for teenagers who are themselves often of two minds as to what is the best thing to do.

Please therefore do not be either too hard upon yourself or your boyfriend, for you each experiencing communication difficulties within your relationship. Hardly unusual or uncommon. IMHO
