I believe that the problem is more that you feel that you have not yet achieved anything in life which is significant or important to you. Am I correct in feeling that you have spent a major proportion of your earlier life attempting to be please everyone else, and that your own equally important needs have been unceremoniously swept under the carpet? To a certain degree you have unintentionally given over control of what makes you feel really alive to somebody else, as you appear to believe deep in your own unconscious mind that they would know better than you what is best. No wonder then that you may now feel such resentment towards the very people who need your love and support most. You have also always set particularly high standards for yourself in both your personal and working lives (some might say unrealistically high), and you therefore rarely feel any lasting sense of satisfaction and achievement after having just accomplished things of which any other person would be justly proud. You are very like myself in that you have a tendency of minimising your achievements in order that other people will not regard you as boasting or vain, but with due respect by continuing to ignore all of your positive achievements and downgrade them, you are effectively at the same time shooting yourself in the foot or are becoming your own worst enemy.
There is a very big difference in my book between constantly beating your own drum and making out that you are a far better and more capable person than you actually are, compared to taking pride from your achievements, regardless of whether or not someone else might feel that they are worthy of mentioning. To someone who has been seriously ill and perhaps deeply depressed for a long period of time, getting out of bed and doing any small task is a major achievement in itself, and is frequently both the most difficult but also at the same time most positive first step towards their own almost inevitable self healing.
To help you to quickly but safely overcome this feeling of not having made any worthwhile progress in your life, think back to and write down in words not only the events themselves but also the feelings of contentment and happiness you experienced when you did something that was important to you. We are attempting to reverse your persistent and negative habit of trying to rate your own achievements according to somebody else's sliding scale, and to hopefully retrain your mind and to above all help you re-experience those good feelings that all of us get when we do something well, or at least in our opinion better than most if not all other people might do. It is only when we discover our true purpose(s) in life THEN LIVE THEM ON A DAILY BASIS, that we will I believe be truly happy. I would therefore regard it as both a great pleasure and privilege to be given this opportunity to assist you in turning around these negative thought habits, as well as hopefully providing you with any further insights which could give us some further hints concerning the nature of your unique life path.
I sense that you have achieved much more in your life than you can presently imagine, and I feel that we need to tap into these and to use them in a positive manner to increase your feelings of self esteem while your life is still on a temporary plateau. Once you are better prepared to leave this plateau and progress to the next level, you will look back to this period of being apparently suspended in space and time as a welcome rest. Things could get much busier in your life from now on, so I say make the most of this short rest break, while you still have it!
God Bless,
