Hi ya there

I was wondering if someone could answer this question for me:

regarding my writing or any new ventures in my life I should look forward to (haven’t had any surprises in my life AT ALL). I would like to know if it is worth my time and efforts of entering a screenwriting contest, will I even place anywhere in the award categories or catch the eye of a director/actor/producer, etc that I really want to work in either NY or Los Angeles? My goal is to work deep in the Hollywood/NY movie industry writing scripts and being decently good at it, I realize my writing fuels me but I want to know will I make a decent livable living with it in my life because my family thinks writing is a very empty dream that doesn’t pay for bills or food on the table or clothes on my back type of deal.

Thanks for any help or reading of my question in advance.....

Follow your dreams as far as they will take you.  If doors close, it is not the right direction.  If you progress, it will fulfil all your expectations.  It is your dream, do not be deterred by those who are not positive in place with the dream.

Hi, Seeks777.

I think that you had a recognized talent for writing when you were in school and that you even entered and won some competitions at that time. I think you were pleasantly surprised that you got rewarded and encouraged in school for doing something that you like doing anyway.

I have a feeling that your environment is not like that now and hasn't been for a while. You mention family, and I think it's a male figure. Although I see that you call him "Dad," I keep feeling that he is your stepfather. He likes fighting for the sport of it and to make others feel bad, and he's misogynistic.

What is coming is a sort of replacement father-figure, an accomplished, self-made intellectual or artistic mind. Could be an editor or perhaps a writer that you meet at a convention or book signing. He will exercise a far more encouraging influence and serve as a role model to you. I get that the writing life won't be as you envision it but will be enormously rewarding. The early glimmerings of your talent were real. Right now, you're stuck because you're not sure what to write and who will read it. You'll get unstuck by submitting query letters and manuscripts. I'm also told you should "get out more." (Who is telling me this?) Also, it's OK to have a vision as long as you're ready to abandon any preconceived notion that does not line up with the facts. In these ways, you will move along in your writing life.

Always ask for knowledge of what will help you and others grow as souls and for the power to carry that out.

Bogulsaw....forget the male figure and no he's not my step dad he's my real father 'only God knows why'....but I digress.

I just need to know if I it is worth my while to enter a script/screenwriting contest or competitions? Looking for a more catalytic method of jumpstarting my writing...my poetry has fallen to the waist side and movies and working in Hollywood with actors and actress has and always been myfirst love so I will try again with my script/screenwriting.... Dead broke as far as paying for entry fees and I don't have time or money to spend sending out manuscripts if it hasn't tehn its not going to happen at all for me as a regular author....that's my take. So now I am trying a different avenue to become known as writer, believe me money is sceondary to having my name known as a writer (nothing fancy like NY times but if I ended up on the list that would be a big success for me). Even worried that whatever I write about I want to have a pseudonym when it gets noticed no need to have all my family members hating me....I just want something to happen and soon with my so called "hobby" writing is my way of painting.....

I.E. my job interview didn't pan out and this job is one I wanted badly but no matter what I said or did I lost out because I didn't fit that dept's criteria, I even told them I'd volunteer without pay and still the interviewer saw my ambition and told me when the other dept opens up the same position on their end I would be the first one on their list to work there....OK so I wait yet again, so I ended up writing anything and everything that I was feeling.....writing is something I can call my own.

Anyway, I do appreciate you reading me again Bogulsaw as well as your time and patience is immensely appreciated in listening to me....
