I've just begun developing my psychic gifts and delving into this whole realm of listening to my intuition a lot more.
On another thread here at Mystic Boards, I read that there are multiple ways of developing psychic gifts. What are those methods, aside from meditation, which I'm already engaged in, are there?
Furthermore, what methods are available for contacting one's spirit guide or guides, and how does one know when one has indeed contacted them vs. a wandering spirit?
Lastly, is it possible to open and read one's own Akashic records, adn fi so, how is that done?

Psychics read the physical/material energies around us all.  They are skilled at deciding what is others and what is their own and this is how they form a predictive stance for their sitters.

A medium connects to spirit guides and attunes to bring the spirit message.  There is more concern for the sitters spirituality than their material life, although it is through our material challenges that we learn our spiritual lessons.

It is important to anyone seeking advice and direction to choose a particular teacher or method and follow through with this method for development.  On this message board you will be open to all kinds of opinions for development and commune with spirit guides.  Even the topic of guides is controversial.

In terms of finding out one's own past lives and delving into one's Akashic records, is that possible?

I do not subscribe to past lives - so that question will have to be answered by others.  

I did get an inspiration from my spirit guide that the Akashic records are the name given to one medium's personal library and it caught on - seems reasonable to me as I have access to a library of all information as well as personal contact with the ancients in spirit who wish to communicate.

Yes it is perfectly possible, with training and knowledge and to a certain degree, luck, too  

Spiritualism and spiritualists do not believe re-incarnataion or in past lives. Their religion believes that when we die our spirit goes to the spirit world and that spirit is what mediums connect with and so try and provide confirmation of life after death.

Others do believe in re-incarnation, and the ability for the soul to have many past lives each with a new spirit. Each spirit having a record of life or Akashic Record held at the Great Library of Hall of Records.

It all depends in what YOU believe in really. Do some research and find out
