I'm not sure what it is exactly... I have heard it explained in medical/scientific terms as a "a split second delay in sensory perception" meaning you're technically absorbing the information around you twice immediately but only consciously aware of the second time ( so it seems familiar for no known reason). Maybe that's all it is, maybe it's more.

But it happens to me often and is a very awkward feeling if nothing else.

I really like what FireRose said, it is nice to hear a scientific/medical reason for it.  But I also think it has an alternative meaning - I just haven't figured out the significance yet.

i get deja vu often
sometimes even in my dreams
and it lasts for up to 5 minuets which aparntly is alot longer than the average persons deja vu
i used to find it really odd when it started happening but im kind of used to it now. haha.

by the way does anyone know what language the word deja vu came from?

It's coming from French! It means "already seen"!

I used to have lots when I was younger but I stopped having them when I decided I wanted no more!It was a period that I used to have them every 3 seconds...It was like something was warning me...
Anyway, from the moment I stopped that I felt pretty better!Being obsessed with the future doesn't actually help your future!I prefer to feel free!

I don't think deja vu is an obsession with the future.  My experience that is so strong it remains today.... I was out to buy a specific item.  It was to help us launch a church group.  As I approached this barn like setting, I knew I had been here before.

In my lifetime I had never been - but everything was so familiar - I knew what I would find inside.
