Dear Sherrylyn,
With reference to communicating with a person who has already passed over you will require the services of a medium, rather than those of a psychic. While mediums posses the same psychic abilities as everyone else does, they specialise in being able to work with the spiritual energies which are at the time around the person who is requesting the reading, while psychics do not use spirits (other than perhaps their own) to read your own energies (your aura), and by determining your personality strengths and weaknesses gain further insights which may help you to make positive improvements in your life. All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are conscious mediums?
Of course you would not be seeking a reading in the first place if you did not want to make some positive changes in your life, but please realise that while much of your personal future is created by whatever conscious decisions you make in the present moment, some things in our lives are to a certain extent predestined to occur, no matter what we decide to do. The problem as I see it is that only God knows which events are predestined and which are not, and with due respect he is not often very forward about telling us which events are set in stone. Perhaps it is better to assume that nothing is predestined to occur, which will at least make us feel that we are still largely in control over our life to live as we see fit to do so (and go with that thought instead).
One of the worst reasons for approaching a psychic is to test them, rather than wanting to learn something of value to you. Even the most gifted psychic's abilities will tend to shut down in the presence of a person whose mind is completely closed to the possibility that they might be able to help them. On the other hand it is unwise to approach a psychic as if they are specially gifted or as if they have all the answers to all the world's problems at their fingertips, or in place of having to make your own decisions. You can use their advice to help you to do so, but depending entirely on psychic readings or a particular reader to make the decisions on your behalf is a recipe for disaster.
Rather than focussing entirely on the person him or herself and making any premature judgements about their psychic ability or lack of, the value of a reading is measured by how much it has helped you and has made you feel more in control of your life. Readings can also provide a source of comfort in assuring you that whatever the future might hold in store for you, you are more than capable of overcoming any challenges it brings.
Focus more on the messages themselves, rather than always on the messenger?
If consulting the psychic involves the payment of a fee, either ask around amongst your friends and other family members as to whether or not they were satisfied with their own reading, or failing this take them along with you to provide you with moral support for the reading itself. If the psychic does not allow your friend to sit in on your reading, try someone else.
Hoping this has helped to answer your excellent question(s),
