A: Are you talking two things here?

A guide comes back to earth (the idea is they have experienced an earth life in their own time) to impress someone who is creating - in psychic abilities, in mediumship, but also in scientific or artistic endeavours. They are not 'taking over' anyone - they are aiding the growth process of the individual. Past lives? as in reincarnation? No, not all guides believe in this idea.

(You mentioned awakening on another thread - could this be the source of the information that is available?)

There are also uneducated spirit in a lower realm of existence who can take over the consciousness of people still in the body. A lot of this happens following an accident or incident where the mind is left open and not consciously controlled.
