When connecting to those that have passed can specific questions be asked or does the reader just get to hear/see what the deceased wants?

For example, I have a relative who passed who the family never knew the story behind his middle name. Some members said his name was First Middle Last but he changed it to FirstMiddle Last (he put the two names together) I've never found any record of this name change. Could someone connecting with him ask him about is middle name or do we only get to know what he wants to tell/show us?

I hope that makes sense. I'm not asking for a reading (just to make that clear ) just asking a question.

My personal experience (and that is all we can ever use) is that spirit brings what they want to say.  But there is an opportunity to ask questions.  IME the material life is no longer of much concern once they have gone into the light (spirit).  The name question would seem a bit frivolous to the new condition.
